Note from the Pastor

I want to thank you for visiting our web site and taking the time to experience our parish and our parish family! It has been the desire of some of us here at St. Mary’s Church to have a vehicle for you to check in on us regularly, to see who and what we are, and why we are proud of our church.
Our church is certainly a busy one, and that means that many individuals have to give of themselves to keep our parish going and growing. We are proud of our full time staff—Linda Wibly our friendly secretary and the voice over the phone for those who call. Our maintenance people Bill Allison and Dan Kovachik can be seen daily around our church, our social hall and cemetery trying to keep all our properties something to be proud of. Linda and Dan also lend their voice to serve as cantors at every Divine Liturgy. All three, as well as myself, have been members of our parish from birth!
Many, many others can be seen regularly here at the church they love. Saint Mary’s Caterers make weddings, high school proms, various parties and even mercy meals memorable occasions. Parishioners and friends regularly support our Bingo games each Sunday and Wednesday evening. We also have our Rosary Society that has its group prayers and Communion breakfasts twice annually, the senior members of St. Mary’s Golden Pillars gather the second Tuesday of each month, and the Greek Catholic Union Lodge #164 meetings are held quarterly. The members of our Parish Advisory Council meet to keep all running smoothly and aid in various important decisions; our ushers weekly collect donations and prepare the funds for deposit; and our Altar Servers faithfully serve at Liturgies each Saturday and Sunday. We are also happy to have two Sisters of Saint Basil the Great, Sisters Bernarda and Leocadia, who are regularly seen worshipping here as well as the other local Byzantine churches, visiting the sick and shut-ins, offering sympathy to those who have lost loved ones, and teaching the Religious Education classes for our youth.
This is only a sample of all that goes on at St. Mary’s Church. Keep returning regularly to see what is happening, and please feel free to visit us whenever you can!

Welcome

From wherever you have traveled or have been led on your spiritual journey, we, the Catholic community of Oneonta, are glad you are among us. We invite you to make yourself at home and consider joining our Christian way of life, worship and service.

What is an annulment of a marriage?

One of the most misunderstood aspects of our faith is the process known as an annulment of a marriage. For a very good article on understanding what a Catholic Church annulment is and is not.CLICK HERE

Welcome to St.Mary's Parish Athlone St. Mary's Parish is the parish on the east side of the river Shannon in the town of Athlone, Co. We are in the diocese of Ardagh & Clonmacnois: we have two churches - St. Mary’s in the centre of the town and Our Lady, Queen of Peace on the outskirts in Coosan.

At this time in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany, there is NO administrastive or application fee to petition the Church to inquire about the sacramentality of a marriage. To inquire about the annulment process or to begin the process you can begin with your pastor or call the Office of Canonical Services directly at 518.453.6620.

The Lenten Spring 2021

Lent always seems to arrive uninvited like an unexpected guest. It knocks on the doors of our soul in the bleakness of winter with its cold, gloom and darkness. No wonder we are not very open to this guest who brings self-discipline and critique, fasting and reflection.

Yet the liturgy calls Lent a 'gracious gift' from God filled with 'joy'. The joy of prayer, of reaching out to our sisters and brothers in need and of celebrating our Baptism in Christ through the mystery of the Eucharist.

We will begin Lent 2021, 11 months into lockdowns, feelings of isolation, the frustrations of on-line learning, of not be able to gather see our friends and family members and for some the fears that accompany the loss of employment and making rent and car payments...and it is dark and cold.

I therefore invite all of us to welcome this gift with open hearts. God is with us. Scripture teaches that God is love but God is also joy and contentment. Who and what do you delight in? That's where you will find God this Lent. Prayer, love of neighbor and our sacramental life are a means to that expereince of joy.

Rummage around the website and see what you might find to help you discover joy...

During Lent...

Pray...do not pray more, rather, pray more fervently, consciously, & honestly.

Fast...yes, fast from food. Come to experience your dependency on God and the hunger of 690+ million [35 million in the United States] of your sisters and brothers who go hungry in our world each day.

Educate yourself on food insecurity. Action Against Hunger CLICK HEREWorld VisionCLICK HERE Hunger in AmericaCLICK HERE

Alongside of food, fast from complaining, gossip, worry, hate, suspicion, anger, words that tear at the fabric of society, judging, worry...

Ash Wednesday & Good Friday are universal days of fast and abstinence from meat. The Fridays of Lent are days of fast and abstinence by traditon.

Give Alms...as Jesus taught do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing. Give to charitable agencies of the church and society, food pantries, be charitable and kind to others and let know one see or know of your actions unless you are teaching your children what it means to be a Christian.

Valarie Kaur—renowned Sikh activist, filmmaker, and civil rights lawyer—describes revolutionary love as the call of our time, a radical, joyful practice that extends in three directions: to others, to our opponents, and to ourselves. Kaur takes readers through her own riveting journey—as a brown girl growing up in California farmland finding her place in the world; as a young adult galvanized by the murders of Sikhs after 9/11; as a law student fighting injustices in American prisons and on Guantánamo Bay; as an activist working with communities recovering from xenophobic attacks; and as a woman trying to heal from her own experiences with police violence and sexual assault.

From an Eastern Orthodox Christian perspective.

The Year of Saint Joseph 2020 - 2021

On the solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, Pope Francis released an Apostolic Letter about Saint Joseph and has declared a “Year of St. Joseph” which will be observed from December 8, 2020 to December 8, 2021. The letter, Patris corde (“a Father’s heart”) is released on the150th anniversary of the proclamation of Saint Joseph as patron of the Universal Church.

The Pope writes: 'After Mary, the Mother of God, no saint is mentioned more frequently in the papal magisterium than Joseph, her spouse. I would like to share some personal reflections on this extraordinary figure, so close to our human expereince'.

The Shadow of the Father is the story of Saint Joseph in novel form by the Polish author Jan Dobraczynski. He was born in Warsaw in 1910 and expereinced the Warsaw Uprising in 1944 spending time in Nazi concentation camps. This novel may help to put flesh and blood on a very devotional character from scripture and give a flavour of the times.

Catholic Jokes...

A Jesuit, a Dominican, and a Franciscan were walking along an old road, debating the greatness of their religious Orders. Suddenly, an apparition of the Holy Family appeared in front of them, with Jesus in a manger and Mary and Joseph praying over him. The Franciscan fell on his face, overcome with awe at the sight of God born in such poverty. The Dominican fell to his knees, adoring the beautiful reflection of the Trinity and the Holy Family. The Jesuit walked up to Joseph, put his arm around his shoulder, and said, “So, have you thought about where to send him to school?”

A Jesuit, a Dominican, and a Trappist were marooned on a desert island. They found a magic lamp, and after some discussion decided to rub it. Lo and behold, a genie appeared and offered them three wishes. They decided it was only fair that they could each have one wish. The Jesuit said he wanted to teach at the world’s most famous university, and poof, he was gone! The Dominican wished to preach in the world’s largest church, and poof, he was gone! Then the Trappist said, “Gee, I already got my wish!”

Volunteer drivers needed...

We have been experiencing a lot of calls lately from people asking for our help in delivering food to households that are under quarantine. We are doing our best to keep up with this request, but are receving more and more calls. With that being said, we are looking for volunteers who would be willing to take food to quaratined people's homes. Catholic Charities would receive a need list from the client, call the store to have them assembly the items, go to the store and ring it out. At this point we would need help to deliver the food to the final destination.

If you are interested in helping with this, please call 607-432-0061 and leave your name, number and where you are located. Caring Connections, 176 Main Street, Oneonta, NY 13820
